The article presents a concept of health and recreation tourism, which includes two components – treatment and health improvement. These components predetermine such varieties of tourism as health, therapeutic and recreation. Health and recreation tourism industry includes a hospitality industry and a tourist infrastructure. Hospitality industry can be reasonably divided into tour operator activities, travel agency activities, hotel business industry, food industry and entertainment industry. In turn, the health and recreation tourism infrastructure is a set of special interrelated and complementary elements of industrial, social and institutional purposes; those elements are necessary and sufficient for effective functioning of a tourist sector, providing tourists with an access to resources and their appropriate use in the health and recreation tourism, as well as for activity of tourism industry enterprises. The possibility to analyze this type of tourism is proved by the case study of Vologda. The results indicate basic directions to upgrade a health and recreation tourism infrastructure
