Abstract   |   Authors   |   References
The article considers the state of the transport complex in the Vologda Oblast; special attention is focused on public transport that has the greatest social importance for the population. The research shows that the Vologda Oblast has a modern transport system which functions rather well, and which is an integral part of the industrial and social infrastructure of the region, ensuring its territorial integrity and interconnection of its major industries. Road passenger transport and urban transport occupies the leading place in the transport complex for rendering services to population, and, despite the increasing vehicle-to-population ratio, public transport remains in demand and it is a necessary means of transport for the population. The author analyzed the performance of road transport enterprises, the condition of their fixed assets, the density of passenger traffic, and the state of the rolling stock of passenger motor transport in the region. The analysis shows that, despite the great social and economic significance of passenger transport, the number of passengers carried and the number of runs performed by public transport in the Vologda Oblast are constantly decreasing, and the state of the sphere on the whole is deteriorating every year. The author considers the main reasons for decline in the attractiveness and relevance of public transport among the Vologda Oblast population to be as follows: significant depreciation of the rolling stock, unprofitability of motor transport enterprises, poor quality of roads, passenger fares, etc. On the basis of the analytical data, presented in the article, the author identifies the problems that hinder the development of public transport, and offers ways of their solution
