In the conditions of development of the region’s economy special importance is attached to its environmental aspects. It is caused by the increasing negative impact on the environment and depletion of natural resources of the territories. As a result, the issue of managing the environment of the region in the framework of its sustainable development is becoming increasingly important. The assessment of environmental sustainability of regional development is one of the tools of such management. The article presents the methodology for calculating the integral index of environmental sustainability of the region’s development, which reflects the following aspects of environmental protection: prevention of its pollution by economic activities, restoration of natural resources, qualitative condition of the environment, and sustainability of financing of environmental activities. The testing of this method on the materials of the Vologda Oblast has shown that the environmental situation in the region is gradually deteriorating. It has been found that this is due to the increase of environmental pollution and insufficient recovery of forest resources, resulting in the depletion of natural resources of the area under consideration. It is noted that economic mechanisms of environmental protection in the region are weakening significantly. According to the authors, this situation is caused by several factors, the main of which is the lack of an integrated approach to promoting environmentally sustainable regional development. The article concludes that the main direction to solve the problems is the improvement of regional policy in the field of environmental protection
