The purpose of the study is to identify the features, trends and factors of socio-economic development of rural territories (“rural” municipal districts/okrugs), adjacent to large cities. The study was conducted on the materials of three municipal districts (Vologda District/Okrug, Prionezhsky District, Yaroslavl District), located around three major cities of Russia (Vologda, Petrozavodsk, Yaroslavl). These issues have become especially relevant and important in connection with the ongoing active discussion in Russia about the formation and development not only of the largest and large urban agglomerations in Russia, but also agglomerations with a population of less than 500 thousand people. At the same time, as a rule, in such agglomerations various agglomeration processes and effects are manifested only in the municipal district/okrug (in most cases completely “rural” – with 100% share of rural population) immediately adjacent to the agglomeration core. To achieve the goal, economic, statistical and comparative analysis, methods of analysis, synthesis, generalization, monographic method were used. It has been revealed that the analyzed “rural” municipal districts, adjacent to large cities, are characterized by quite favorable trends and features of socio-economic development: low natural population decline, high migration inflow, leadership in the region in the development of agricultural production and commissioning of housing, higher standard of living and the level of improvement of the housing stock. The article also proposes a typology of rural development factors for management purposes; the most significant factors for suburban rural territories are identified; recommendations for improving the management of the development of such territories are substantiated. The results of this work can be used in the activities of local self-government bodies, and also serve as a basis for further research on this topic
