The social nature of human activity involves the necessity of its management in different structures: political, economic, social, regulatory, sectoral and territorial. The scientific literature considers territorial organization as an interdependent combination and functioning of settlement systems, economy and environment, administrative-territorial structures and life support, which are formed at a certain stage of socio-economic development. Territorial organization leads to the formation of a variety of territorial units, which include habitats, landscapes, natural economic areas, functional areas, etc. One of the types of territorial units is a rural area. The article considers one of the aspects of the research in rural areas. It is a habitat and living environment of the rural population. The article identifies the concept and components of rural areas as a habitat and describes their characteristics
