The article analyzes the issue of assessing the level of teachers’ professional competence in the educational process and substantiates the relevance and importance of this problem. The authors describe the existing theoretical approaches to the definition “professional competence”. The article reveals that the modern requirements to teacher training are focused on the development of their competence. The work presents a list of necessary theoretical and practical skills of a competent teacher and describes a mechanism for evaluating the quality of teaching, which helps to determine the level of professional competence formation. The teacher is developing not only at school but also at the institutions of additional education of children and the youth. These include the ISEDT RAS Research-and-Educational Center, which carries out the assessment of teachers’ professional competence through the evaluation of the quality of teaching of major, elective and special courses. The article details the structure and features of the identification of quality indicators of teaching. It considers the prospects to improve the professional competence of teachers working at the Research-and-Educational Center. The work concludes that the Institute of Socio-Economic Development of Territories of the Russian Academy of Sciences has developed a productive system of work with the teachers of the Research-and-Educational Center, aimed at developing their professional competence
