The paper considers economic development of our country under economic sanctions. It proposes to use the work in the sphere of standardization as a tool to stabilize the situation. The authors analyze the current situation in the field of standardization. They consider the goals and objectives of standardization in different time periods and identify one of the main current tasks, which consists in the necessity to improve the quality of life of the population. The article presents the analysis of legislation in this area, reviews the current legislative framework for standardization, and identifies promising directions for improving the legislation in this sphere. The authors analyze economic benefits of standardization using the data of both Russian and international studies. The paper addresses the issues of funding the development and harmonization of standards, and involvement of private sector in the process of standards development. The authors investigate the possibility of applying standards not only at the level of enterprises, but also at higher levels for the purpose of sustainable development of administrative-territorial formations. The paper contains some examples of work in this area in Russia and abroad, in technical committees as well: international ISO/TC 268 “Sustainable Development in Communities” and national TC 115 “Sustainable Development of Administrative-Territorial Entities”. The authors make an overview of international cooperation in the framework of the activities of the International Organization for Standardization and the International Electrotechnical Commission. Analyzing the content of the 36th ISO General Assembly, the authors define activities in the field of standardization and its development prospects in the field of international cooperation
