An important prerequisite for active development of Russian regions consists in the fullest use of their internal potential; therefore it becomes necessary to find opportunities for effective and mutually beneficial cooperation between public authorities and other actors of economic activity. Socially oriented non-profit organizations are considered to be important partners in addressing socially important issues. Their functioning is currently under close attention of the government and the scientific community, but this issue has not been sufficiently studied with regard to the subjects of the Russian Federation. In this regard, the goal of the present paper is to assess the status and functioning of socially oriented non-profit organizations in Russian regions. To achieve this goal, it is planned to review the key features of the functioning of such organizations in the regions and to analyze statistical indicators of the federal districts of the Russian Federation related to the activities of socially oriented non-profit organizations. The study revealed an increase in the number of organizations of the “third” sector, the number of people involved in their activities, as well as the volume of cash and property receipts. Analysis of the number of people employed in socially oriented non-profit organizations shows that the most preferred employers are those who provide services in the fields of education and health; but in general, the share of those who work in the non-profit sector is small. At the same time, the growth rate of the number of volunteers from 2012 to 2016 was more than 260% across the country. In the course of studying the sources of income of money and property, we found that, despite the growing support from the government, socially oriented non-profit organizations receive the greatest income from the sale of goods and the provision of services
