The article studies the approaches toward assessing economic availability of foodstuffs in the North-West federal district, provides an estimation of average per capita consumption of foodstuffs by the population, as well as taking into account caloric value and balance of nutrients content. The article also analyses the impact of the population incomes change on the consumption of basic foodstuffs
