The research topic relevance is associated with the need to analyze the role of education and education system modernization in the context of key directions of innovative development of Russian society, in particular the direction focused on forming an innovative personality as a special social type. The study is based on the author’s previous studies, analyzing effectiveness of the implementation of the Strategy for Innovative Development of the Russian Federation up to 2020 through the prism of Russia’s positions in the world rankings, as well as in terms of key quantitative indicators; considering the main theoretical approaches and problems of studying an innovative personality and innovative potential. The aim of the study is to analyze the role of education in the structure of life values of young people in the context of innovative development of the Russian Federation (case study of the Republic of Karelia). With special attention the author considers two main aspects: young people’s motivation to education, a role of education in their value system; a level of formation of innovative values and competencies, as well as a role of educational institutions in innovative development of the youth. The theoretical and methodological basis of the study comprises a civilizational approach to the study of socio-economic processes and innovative development of society and a dispositional concept of personality, with regard to achievements of modern cognitive sciences. The study uses theoretical analysis and secondary analysis of sociological research results, as well as empirical methods: electronic questionnaires, expert interviews, and discourse analysis. The study results in clarification of ideas about content of the concept “innovative personality”, definition of the role of education in the structure of values of the modern youth, and characterization of the role of school and university in the formation of innovative values and competencies. The work leads us to a new research direction: study of higher education potential in the formation of innovative personality with regard to socio-historical and civilizational features of Russian society. Scientific novelty is the author’s system of indicators included in the concepts of discourse analysis of the role of education in the structure of life values of the younger generation
